Sometimes exceptional work needs to be rewarded.

That’s exactly what happened with Drew McIntyre winning the Undisputed WWE championship from Cody Rhodes in their Three Stages of Hell match on SmackDown in Germany.

McIntyre, 40, has been WWE’s best heel for the past three years and he couldn’t go any longer without actually winning back the gold he justifiably feels he’s been cheated out of at times. His passionate mic work and use of social media have been some of the best in the industry. He is believable, truthful to a point and ruthless all at once.

The win unexpectedly shook up SmackDown and the WWE championship scene. WWE has flipped what we might have thought we were getting at WrestleMania 42 on its head for a number of its top stars, without Rhodes losing the title clean. He was kicked low in the first stage and his mixing it up with an interfering Jacob Fatu — who was there for revenge on McIntyre — cost him the final steel cage portion.
