Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison has an interesting explanation for his 140-mph ride.
In an updated citation of misdemeanor charges for speeding and reckless driving on Thursday, records reviewed by ESPN showed Addison claimed that “his dog was having an emergency at his residence and that was the reason for his speed.”
The citation also noted that a Minnesota State Patrol officer had seen the rookie receiver driving at an “extremely high rate of speed” eastbound on I-94 at 3 a.m.
He was later clocked at 140 mph, well over the 55 mph speed limit that was posted.
Addison appeared to slow down when he saw the lights of another state patrol officer who had been pulled over on the side of the road, according to ESPN.
Records show that he was cited for “consciously disregarding a substantial or unjustifiable risk,” according to the Star Tribune.
Addison had been driving a Lamborghini Urus with dealer license plates at the time he was stopped.
The rookie issued an apology on Friday for his actions, but the statement made no mention of the dog.
“Yesterday morning I made a mistake and used poor judgment,” Addison said in his statement. “I recognize and own that. I am going to learn from this and not repeat the behavior. I am truly sorry.”
The team had said it was aware of the incident and was gathering more information.
Addison was selected with the No. 23rd overall pick by the Vikings in April’s NFL draft.
He reported to training camp on Sunday.
The 21-year-old receiver is expected to play a significant role for the Vikings this season after sitting out some of the offseason program due to an undisclosed injury.
Addison signed a four-year, 13.7 million rookie deal that included a $7 million signing bonus.
