Xavier McKinney isn’t going to show up to the Giants’ facility Thursday with his hand out.
After the nine-figure extensions secured since last season ended by quarterback Daniel Jones, defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence and left tackle Andrew Thomas, logic dictates that McKinney is the next young player in line to get paid big bucks.
“I’m not going to try to do anything extra,” McKinney said after Wednesday’s first practice of training camp. “We have a sign that says ‘We is greater than me,’ so I’m not too much worried about my situation. I’m just worried about being able to make this team better. That’s always been my focus.”
McKinney is due $1.75 million on the last year of his rookie contract.
There are 14 safeties making at least $10 million per year, but he likely needs another season like he had in 2021 (tied for lead among safeties with five interceptions) in order to negotiate at that level.
“I’m going to just continue to be me,” McKinney said. “That’s what’s gotten me this far. I’m never going to change. I think my teammates appreciate that and the staff appreciates that.”
McKinney, 23, has missed 17 of 52 career games due to injuries, including eight last season due to broken fingers suffered in an ATV accident during the bye week.
Former NFL agent Joel Corry, a contracts analyst for CBSSports.com, previously told The Post that “there’s no deal he should do right now if he thinks he’s just scratching the surface of his talent,” because it’s unlikely the Giants would pay top dollar before seeing him stay healthy.
The likelihood of McKinney getting franchise-tagged and kept from free agency next offseason decreased when Saquon Barkley didn’t agree to an extension last week.
McKinney told Barkley, who is a candidate for a second tag, that he was “with him” if he decided to hold out of camp but is “glad” it didn’t come to that and Barkley reported.
“We have a greater goal,” McKinney said, “and that’s to win championships ultimately.”
DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches is in the concussion protocol after a car accident in the Meadowlands complex, but escaped any other major injuries stemming from the crash, as first reported by The Athletic.
Another vehicle did not comply with a stop sign and caused the collision, a source told The Post.
Nunez-Roches went to a hospital but did not spend the night and was at the team facility (but did not practice) Wednesday. The Giants already are without DTs A’Shawn Robinson, D.J. Davidson and Vernon Butler to start camp.
With depth running short, DT Kevin Atkins was signed after practice. He worked out for the Giants last week after he totaled 14 tackles, a sack and two fumble recoveries last season in the XFL, which announced the transaction.
Rookie third-round WR Jalin Hyatt left practice early with trainers due to a heat-related issue.
