Bill Belichick can’t stay away from football.
The 2024 season will be the first year Belichick has not had a job in the NFL since 1974. His son Steve was an assistant coach under his dad with New England and was hired to be defensive coordinator at University of Washington.
The elder Belichick joined his son at a Huskies practice to get an up-close look at his new gig.
On Saturday, Belichick was on the Washington practice field decked out in Huskies gear, as shown in a photo shared by RealDawg.com’s Evan Feather, and he participated in a coaching clinic held by Washington head coach Jedd Fisch for local high school coaches.
It’s both the younger Belichick and Fisch’s first year with Washington. Fisch and Belichick have already worked together before; both were on the Patriots staff in 2020. Fisch was the quarterbacks coach, and Belichick was the outside linebackers coach.
Coming off a national championship appearance last season, Washington hopes to stay atop the college football landscape as it enters the Big Ten.
Joining them in the Big Ten are rivals Oregon, USC, and UCLA, all making the jump from the Pac-12.
The Huskies’ biggest game of the upcoming season is a national championship rematch against Michigan.
They host the Wolverines on Oct. 5 in a game they’ve likely had circled since the schedule was released.
Bill Belichick, who won two Super Bowls as the defensive coordinator of the Giants and six as the head coach of the Patriots, was also the keynote speaker at the event for youth football coaches. Fisch said he’ll be spending time with the team over the next five days.
While he doesn’t have a job for the 2024 NFL season, he’s expected to find one for the 2025 season. Belichick currently ranks third in league history with 302 wins as a head coach and first in postseason victories with 31.
