You know what would help the Yankees right now?

A dip into their recent past. If they had, for example, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Kyle Higashioka and Tim Hill, they would have a more complete roster and be more crisis-proof than they currently are.

In other words, they don’t need stars to be more bulletproof, and it is not really a worthwhile exercise to talk about stars, because all indicators are that Hal Steinbrenner is not opening the pinstripe wallet for that level of player and contract.

Agents and opposing teams describe the Yankees more in a holding pattern, with the sense that they want to clear as much of Marcus Stroman’s $18 million 2025 obligation as possible to free up dollars to shop elsewhere. With still a deep stable of free-agent starters available — including Jack Flaherty, Kyle Gibson, Andrew Heaney, Nick Pivetta and Max Scherzer — it is not going to be easy to execute a Stroman trade. At least not in the short run.
